Harbord is the older name for Freshwater on the northern beaches, and plenty of locals still use it. The beach was where Duke Kahanamoku gave his surfing demonstration in 1914, which is generally taken as the start of surfing in Australia. It sits between Manly and Curl Curl, about 15 kilometres from the Sydney CBD.
Half the northern beaches still calls it Harbord and the other half says Freshwater. We answer to either. Our florists have been sending flowers up that way for generations.
