When someone you care about is having cancer treatment, it can be hard to know what helps. Often it's simply knowing they're being thought of.
A few things worth knowing before you send flowers: many oncology and transplant wards don't allow fresh flowers or plants, because of infection risk. It's always worth a quick call to the ward. If flowers aren't permitted, a hamper, a candle or a soft blanket is a kind alternative, and we can put something together for you.
Ring the ward and ask. Some wards allow flowers freely, some allow them only in certain rooms, and some don't at all. Strongly scented flowers, lilies especially, are often unwelcome even where flowers are permitted, because treatment can make people very sensitive to smell.
If you're unsure, send to the home instead. It's often more welcome anyway, since the flowers will be there when they get back.
Something small and low-maintenance rather than a large arrangement that needs tending. A hamper with easy food. Hand cream and lip balm, because treatment is very drying. A soft toy for a child. Something to read.
And a card that doesn't need answering.
